OTTAWA, April 12, 2017 /CNW/ - Today, Robyn Benson, National President of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), on behalf of PSAC and its component, the Union of Solicitor General Employees (USGE), sent a letter to the President of the Treasury Board, Minister Scott Brison, to raise concerns regarding fair treatment for the RCMP civilian members who will become part of the federal public service.
Last week, the Liberal government announced a 4.8 per cent wage hike for members of Canada's national police force, but there was nothing for civilian members, whose pay increases have always been harmonized to regular members who work as police officers.
PSAC wants to meet with Minister Brison to demand that the RCMP civilian employees' rights and benefits are protected. PSAC/USGE believes that these employees should not suffer a negative impact because they are becoming members of unions and the public service.
"No employee should be punished for becoming a member of a Union," said Benson. "PSAC will stand up for these workers to ensure that they do not lose any benefits when they become members of the public service."
The Enhancing Royal Canadian Mounted Police Accountability Act provides for the conversion of Civilian Member positions into the core public service administration and its labour relations regime. Approximately 1000 employees will then be represented by PSAC/USGE, which already represents 5000 public service employees of the RCMP.
