OTTAWA, June 1, 2017 /CNW/ - The Public Service Alliance of Canada has launched a campaign on pensions and retirement security, which includes a video, website and an online action for PSAC members to participate in.
"Bill C-27 poses a serious threat to defined benefit pension plans and is not a path towards building stronger retirement security for Canadians." said Robyn Benson, National President of PSAC. "Our campaign will help send this message to the government, as well as educate our members about their pensions and what is a stake."
In 2015, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that defined benefit pension plans that workers and retirees have already paid into should not be retroactively changed into target benefit plans. Yet, this is exactly what Bill C-27 will do.
"Our campaign is an opportunity to engage with our members, our elected officials and the public about the important role work place pensions play in the retirement security of many Canadians," added Benson. "We need to build on the positive steps like the recent expansion of the Canada Pension Plan benefits to ensure that all Canadian workers have the retirement security they deserve. Protecting the pension benefits workers and retirees already have is critical to doing this."
