PSAC supports members of Rights and Democracy in the crisis shaking the
institution

MONTREAL , Jan. 25 /CNW Telbec/ - Following the sudden death of Rémy Beauregard a few weeks ago, the debates and confrontations being waged on the Board of Directors of Rights and Democracy have now boiled over. Mr. Beauregard , who defended the mission and independence of Rights and Democracy in all forums, was a staunch defender of rights and freedoms in Canada , mainly in Ontario, and his leadership and influence as president will be sorely missed.

In response to the critical situation now confronting Rights and Democracy, the Public Service Alliance of Canada is concerned about the ideological shift that some Board members seem to want to impose on this major public organization. As an institution that answers to the Parliament of Canada , it is crucial that Rights and Democracy continue to carry out its mandate in a totally independent and non-partisan manner. By its very nature, Rights and Democracy plays a very special role by working in cooperation with civilian organizations, the governments of several countries and international institutions on major issues relating to human rights and democratic development in some of the most problematic countries in the world. The work done by Rights and Democracy is recognized in Canada and the world over; and its work is subject to five-year assessments, all of which have been positive to date.

All employees are very committed to the mandate of their organization, and they hope to be able to devote themselves fully to its implementation.
