EDMONTON, July 26, 2012 /CNW/ - On Friday afternoon, PTI Group will deliver thousands of necessary food items, along with one of its refrigerated grocery trucks, to help Bissell Centre continue providing daily meals to hundreds of inner-city community members. This is in response to yesterday's announcement that, due to recent thunderstorms, Bissell Centre had experienced a sewage surge/backup which closed down their Food Room, Kitchen, Child Care and Community Closet. The extent of the damage is still being assessed however damages are severe.
PTI has made the necessary provisions to allow the refrigerated truck to remain on Bissell premise until their facility is back up and running, allowing them to maintain and preserve all perishable donations coming from PTI and others in the Edmonton community.
PTI has a long-standing history of providing swift response to those in need. In 2009 the company heard about the desperate need Santas Anonymous was having and a call for help went out across the company. By the end of the day, PTI staff generated more than $21,000 to buy an estimated 1,800 toys. Since then, staff has come to look forward to spreading joy and answering the cry for help from those most in need. Last year just days before Christmas, when the Bissell Centre was the target of theft, PTI jumped in and made a quick donation to the organization. So when Bissell Centre staff called yesterday, one quick call to President and Chief Executive Officer, Ron Green, explaining the predicament was all that was needed. "If PTI is about anything, it is about giving back to the community. Not only are we are all very fortunate at PTI, but we are dealing with a recent flood ourselves and understand the gravity of the situation Bissell is dealing with. It was an easy decision to make" said Green.
"Tomorrow's delivery is just the beginning," comments Green. "Our staff is organizing a donation drive at each of our four local offices, and we will continue to monitor the Centre's needs in the days and weeks ahead. I have kicked things off by donating $1,000 towards new undergarments and encourage other companies to do the same."
Please note that Bissell Centre (East Building) is closed to the public, however staff are working and available to take donations via phone or online at www.bissellcentre.org. Donations made to Bissell Centre are put towards programs that provide unemployed people jobs, homeless people homes and families free child care.
