Public Health Nurses Hold Strike Vote
NORFOLK, ON, April 19, 2012 /CNW/ - Public Health Nurses working for the Haldimand Norfolk Health Unit are holding a strike vote today following the breakdown of negotiations with The Corporation of Norfolk County.
The nurses - members of the Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) - have been in negotiations since last October; their contract expired June 30, 2011.
Should the nurses vote to strike, they will be in a legal strike position as of 12:01 am on Saturday, April 21.
"Public Health Nurses are an invaluable asset to the community," notes ONA President Linda Haslam-Stroud, RN. "They offer services that include prenatal classes, testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, immunizations, breastfeeding support for new mothers, mental health support, individual counseling in schools and within the community, injury prevention for seniors, outbreak management, suicide intervention and counseling, infectious disease control, parenting support and provide medical services to expectant mothers."
In all of Haldimand-Norfolk, this long list of services is provided by a small but dedicated group of 25 Public Health Nurses.
"I urge the residents of Haldimand Norfolk to contact their council members to share how our dedicated Public Health Nurses have touched their lives," says Haslam-Stroud. "No nurse ever wants to strike, so we all hope Council members and the public will recognize the invaluable services our nurses bring to this community."
Council members and their contact information is attached.
ONA is the union representing 59,000 front-line RNs and allied health professionals and more than 13,000 nursing student affiliates providing care in Ontario communities, hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, industry and clinics.
