Public Information Notice - Public Safety Notice Concerning Oiled Birds in Newfoundland and Labrador

ST. JOHN'S, NL, Jan. 20, 2014 /CNW/ - Media representatives are advised that Environment Canada is monitoring the occurrence of oiled birds off the coast of Fogo Island, Newfoundland and Labrador. Residents are asked to report oiled birds through the Environmental Emergency line at 1-800-563-9089. The public is advised not to approach or handle the birds as it may cause further harm to the birds.

As the migratory bird hunting season is currently underway, hunters are advised that oiled birds should not be consumed. To ensure proper disposal, harvested oiled birds should be individually placed into a generic plastic bag and labeled with the date and location where the bird was harvested. Harvested oiled birds can be dropped off at the following locations:

Environment Canada's Canadian Wildlife Service and the Animal Health Division of the provincial Department of Natural Resources will co-ordinate the collection of the carcasses and ensure proper disposal.
