"The experience I went through at the CHUM, 18 years ago, was an incredible saga for me. We must continue … to support our great teaching hospital, which is there for each and every one of us, when we vitally need it."
- Lucien Bouchard, lawyer, former Premier of Quebec and CHUM patient in 1994
"One fine Thursday evening, my family was summoned, and I thought I was headed for the great beyond. An expert emergency intervention at the CHUM, which I will never forget, saved my life. Now it's our turn to give to our CHUM …"
- Brian Mulroney, lawyer, former Prime Minister of Canada and CHUM patient in 2005
"The team that took me through a major, cutting-edge procedure knows to what degree an ordeal like this can be transformative, leading to a more meaningful life and greater awareness. For this, I must express my gratitude to the CHUM."
- Anne Robert, violinist and current patient at CHUM
MONTREAL, Sept. 25, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The Fondation du Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM) today publicly launched its capital fundraising campaign for the large teaching hospital. It is one of the largest such campaigns ever undertaken in Canada's healthcare sector. With the tagline "Donnons-nous le meilleur de la santé" (Giving ourselves the best in Healthcare), the Campaign Cabinet is appealing to the generosity of Quebec donors to help it reach its goal of $300 million. The money raised will be used to purchase state-of-the-art equipment and support research, teaching and health promotion at the existing CHUM and the new CHUM, currently under construction.
The public phase of the capital campaign is getting under way now that it has reached 50% of its $300 million target, thanks to commitments by the Fondation's numerous donors—corporations, foundations and families—and revenues generated by the Fondation's recurrent activities.
The business community heeds the call
The Chairman of the Campaign Cabinet, Guy Savard, Chairman of Merrill Lynch Canada, stressed the CHUM's crucial role in the healthcare system: "This outstanding teaching hospital is there to find solutions to our most complex health challenges. The members of the Campaign Cabinet, representing the business community, are heeding the CHUM's call and appealing to the generosity of major donors. Together, let's take this opportunity to provide the CHUM committed team with equipment and resources that are commensurate with their talents."
Meeting public expectations
"The Fondation is proud of the pledges it received from corporations, foundations and families during the silent phase of the capital fundraising campaign. It is very grateful for the generosity already shown by numerous donors and would like to express heartfelt thanks. Theirs is a significant gesture with a concrete impact that benefits patients," said Ékram Antoine Rabbat, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Fondation du CHUM. "The Fondation is also very appreciative of the enthusiasm of its Campaign Cabinet, which has rallied behind the cause and is devoting time and talent to canvasing major donors. Each and every donation counts and makes a difference. Together, we can contribute to equipping the CHUM with the resources it needs to provide the best possible patient care."
"The CHUM is fortunate to be able to count on the business community, which has embraced the goal of providing Quebeckers with the best care—today and for generations to come. The new downtown CHUM is a project that brings society together," said Christian Paire, the CHUM's Director General and Chief Executive Officer. "Delivering the best in healthcare: this is what motivates the CHUM's 12,000 professionals, physicians, nurses and staff members every day. In a little over a year, we'll be getting ready to open the CHUM Research Centre, which will house some 150 research teams, as well as a Centre intégré d'enseignement et de formation. In 2016, the first patients will cross the threshold of the new, fully operational hospital. An amphitheatre and a clinical and administrative office tower will be added in 2019. Time is flying by, and we need donations to provide our patients with the best available equipment and therapies. Each contribution is another step toward continued excellence in care at the CHUM."
The funds raised by the Campaign Cabinet will be allocated on the basis of guidelines defined in the CHUM's strategic plan. Most of the donations will therefore go to purchasing equipment that will support the hospital's major strategic clinical areas (cancer, neuroscience, cardiovascular and metabolic, transplant, functional musculoskeletal). Funding will also be provided for innovative projects to be carried out at the CHUM Research Centre, recruiting young researchers and providing professional development for students, residents, physicians and healthcare professionals. The campaign will support teaching by funding the acquisition of specialized equipment and setting up the technological infrastructure at the integrated teaching and training centre, which will become an integral part of CHUM. Lastly, donations to the campaign will help extend health promotion initiatives.
