Quaker oatmeal provides the nutritious energy to get you going* on and off the ice
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Jan. 23, 2013 /CNW/ - The Quaker brand has set out to inspire Canadians to start their day with the whole grain goodness of 100 per cent Canadian oats. With hockey season -- Canada's most beloved time of the year -- in full swing, thousands of families are seeking convenient breakfast solutions to give them the nutritious energy they need to play.
Seventy-five per cent of Canadian children are active in sports, like hockey.1 However, only one in four Canadian children are meeting the recommended four servings of grain products daily.2
To spread the word about the importance of a nutritious breakfast and the goodness of whole grain oats as a source of fibre and energy, the Quaker brand has teamed up with two experts - Linda Staal and Pearle Nerenberg - both of whom know all about the importance of starting the morning in a nutritious way and the positive impact it has on performance - both on and off the ice.
Linda Staal is not your typical hockey mom. She is in an elite league of her own having successfully raised four professional hockey players - Eric, Marc, Jordan and Jared. Staal and registered Sports Dietitian, Pearle Nerenberg will be sharing their message with Canadians to motivate them to choose healthier breakfast choices. In addition to telling their stories about raising superstar athletes and working with them on a sound nutrition program, Staal and Nerenberg hope to encourage the one in five Canadians who say they are too rushed, or that there is no time for breakfast3, to make the time to enjoy a bowl of oatmeal and better set the tone for the rest of the day. Quaker ambassadors will also be visiting hockey arenas coast to coast sampling over 200,000 bowls of oatmeal and helping families shape breakfast plans with a winning game plan in mind.
Nerenberg says although breakfast is an essential meal of the day, not all breakfasts are created equal. "It's the quality of the food that you put into your body that counts. I encourage my clients to choose foods that are lower in saturated fats and sugars and that are made from 100 per cent whole grains. Oatmeal is wholesome, nourishing and good for you. It tastes great and can fit easily into your everyday diet. Quaker oatmeal is convenient and easy to prepare. You can keep it interesting by adding fruit, nuts and various toppings. It really is part of a winning breakfast."
Motivating her sons to eat well was always top of mind for Linda Staal. Staal says, "On cold winter days, the boys would eat oatmeal with maple syrup, before heading off to hockey practices and games. The warm nutritious breakfast gave them the energy they needed to start their day and fuel their passion for the sport." Staal adds, "Eating healthy first thing in the morning was particularly important so a balanced breakfast became part of their routine. The boys loved oatmeal and they still eat it before practices."
*Source of energy
The benefits of oats go beyond sports. Oats are a source of fibre, consisting of both soluble and insoluble fibre and are typically low in fat.4 Research suggests that those who eat breakfast tend to be more physically active than those who skip breakfast.5
"As a former hockey player and coach, I understand that most athletes train early in the morning so it's important to have a proper breakfast to set the optimal pace for your whole day," says Nerenberg. "Try the MVPeach and Honey Oatmeal recipe, topped with walnuts and made with milk for the ideal pre-game meal. It will fill up young athletes and also give them the energy they need to play at their best." For this recipe and more than 300 others, visit QuakerOats.ca.
"The Quaker brand is all about empowering families to start their day in the best possible way. By enjoying the nutritional benefits of 100 per cent whole grain Canadian oats Quaker oatmeal provides nutritious energy to get you going," says Kathryn Matheson, Vice President, Brand Marketing at PepsiCo Foods Canada. "Linda Staal is the ultimate 'hockey mom' and eating well, played a fundamental role in fostering her sons' potential and helping them achieve their dreams. We've partnered with Linda to help spread the word about the role a wholesome breakfast can have in helping young players achieve peak performance."
This initiative is part of the "Quaker Up" global integrated marketing campaign which will deliver messages of "Nutritious Energy to get you going" through mediums including television, radio, magazine, digital advertising, as well as sampling and public relations. The new 30-second television ad can be seen until April 26 on prime time shows like ET Canada, Undercover Boss, Vegas and New Girl.
