MONTREAL, March 9, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - Quebec furniture will be in the spotlight as a result of the new collaboration between the Quebec Furniture Manufacturers' Association (QFMA) and the Open House Weekends (OHW) event. To mark the 20th edition of the event, four residential units will be furnished with made-in-Quebec furniture by four designers, overseen by renowned designer Jean-Claude Poitras. In 2016, OHW includes 55 new residential projects in the Greater Montreal Area, which will be open to the public on the weekends of April 2-3 and April 9-10.
"This collaboration between the QFMA and Open House Weekends is in keeping with our desire to showcase the magnificent furniture that is made here," said QFMA President and CEO, Pierre Richard. "The idea of furnishing four residential units with Quebec-made furniture, under the direction of Jean-Claude Poitras, is innovative and auspicious. This will put the spotlight on the diversity, quality, comfort and design of Quebec made furniture. And we also note with pride that, once the event is over, the 17 participating furniture manufacturers will be turning over more than $70,000 of retail-value furniture to the Habitat for Humanity Foundation."
The instrumental figure of this collaboration is the multi-discipline designer, Jean-Claude Poitras, who is also the spokesperson for OHW. Looking ahead to the event, Mr. Poitras remarked: "We want to bring exposure to Québec's creativity in the furniture industry by showcasing its manufacturers, and its industrial and interior designers by partnering them with innovative residential home-builders."
The 17 participating furniture manufacturing companies are: Alphavic, Amisco, Arboit & Poitras Furniture, Beaudoin, Bois & Design, Dinec, Dutailier, G Romano, Huppé, Ideal, Matelas Therapedic, Mirabel Mattress, Mobican, Nexera, South Shore Furniture, Via, and Zedbed.
Furniture-industry companies have a presence in every region of the province, in some 1,500 locations, and they rank among the biggest manufacturing employers, most of which are Quebec-owned. "In fact, people love buying locally made furniture that has the imprint of Quebec's creative talent; it's also a choice that fosters prosperity, with more than 22,000 jobs. And because it is made here, Quebec furniture is an environmentally-friendly choice." The province of Quebec accounted for 46% of the total deliveries of residential and office furniture made in Canada in 2014. The Quebec furniture industry plays a considerable role in terms of Quebec's socioeconomic development and is the country's undisputed leader in this sector.
The Quebec Furniture Manufacturers' Association actively contributes to the growth of the Quebec furniture industry and oversees its promotion and development in Canada and internationally. Founded in 1942, the QFMA brings together manufacturers of residential, office and institutional furniture, manufacturers of furniture components, as well as industry suppliers. The QFMA also defends the interest of its members and conveys industry issues on various speaking platforms and to government authorities. Full details are available at afmq.com.
