Queering Sex Ed makes sex education accessible to LGBTQ youth

Planned Parenthood Toronto launches new sexual health resources for LGBTQ youth.

TORONTO, March 27, 2013 /CNW/ - On Thursday March 28^th, Planned Parenthood Toronto will launch a series of new sexual health resources developed by and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and queer (LGBTQ) youth through the Queering Sex Ed project.

An advisory committee for the project, comprised of ten LGBTQ youth, worked over six months to develop a series of print and video resources addressing areas of sexual health such as body positivity, identity, language, sex acts, and consent.  These new resources will provide LGBTQ youth with accessible information that speaks to the realities of their lives.

"Planned Parenthood Toronto is committed to making sexual health accessible to all communities," said Sarah Hobbs-Blyth, Executive Director, "Queering Sex Ed addresses a gap in traditional sex education, which frequently ignores the experiences and needs of LGBTQ youth."

The Queering Sex Ed Project is only one example of Planned Parenthood Toronto's ongoing commitment to supporting LGBTQ youth.  Planned Parenthood Toronto is also home to the Teens Educating and Confronting Homophobia (T.E.A.C.H.) anti-homophobia education program, programming for women who have sex with women, and LGBTQ-positive health services and community programming.

A community event is being held to celebrate and to share the work of the Queering Sex Ed Project with the public.  Queering Sex Ed Presents: Filling the Gaps- An Evening of Sex Ed and Revelry will take place on Thursday, March 28^th at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, located at 12 Alexander St.  A community fair from 6:00pm will be followed by performances and screening of the project videos at 7:30pm.
