QUENCH App for iPhone & iPod touch Helps You Be Green and Stay Hydrated
TORONTO, March 22, 2012 /CNW/ - To celebrate UN World Water Day, The Water Brothers TV Series and TVO announced the launch of QUENCH, a free app for iPhone and iPod touch that instantly connects you to the closest public water fountains and official water Re-fill Locations in the Greater Toronto area.
QUENCH uses a database developed by Blue W, a national not-for-profit network of water Re-fill Locations, which allows you to search by either entering a specific address or intersection or using location services on your iPhone.
Toronto has some of the cleanest and safest tap water in the world and The Water Brothers and TVO want people to make use of barrier-free access to clean, healthy water. For the outdoor enthusiast, cyclist, runner, tourist, and average urban adventurer, the QUENCH App will be an important tool to keep you hydrated and cut down the amount of plastic ending up in landfills. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, roughly 1.5 million tons of plastic are expended in the bottling of 89 billion litres of water each year.
"We are at an amazing time in human history, where we can all initiate change in our daily lives, on a local level, to solve global problems," says The Water Brothers co-host Tyler Mifflin. "We hope with the QUENCH App we can take a step towards solving some of those problems, and through The Water Brothers series we can shed some light on water issues around the world."
QUENCH is supported by official Re-fill Locations across the Greater Toronto area. These are local businesses such as restaurants and retailers who are willing to provide free tap water to visitors carrying reusable bottles. Participating Re-fill Locations will have a QUENCH decal displayed in their front windows and are listed prominently through the app.
The QUENCH App allows you to:
- Search for the closest water fountains or Re-fill Locations either by destination or using location services;
- Share water fountain or Re-fill Location information with friends, family and workout partners;
- Save your favorite water fountain locations and Re-fill Locations; suggest the addition of new water fountains on your route;
- Add pictures of your favorite water fountain or Re-fill Location as well as add comments.
The QUENCH App is available for free from the App Store on iPhone or iPod touch or at www.itunes.ca/appstore.
