/R E P E A T -- Media Advisory - community event in the Jane and Steeles area - Brighter Nights™: Shining a Light on Safety in Toronto Communities/

TORONTO, Aug. 23, 2013 /CNW/ - Residents in communities across the city are working with Toronto Hydro-Electric System ("Toronto Hydro"), City of Toronto Community Crisis Response Program (CCRP), Toronto Community Housing and local volunteers to brighten the night by installing energy efficient light bulbs. This year, approximately 800 bulbs have been installed in communities across the city.  Today's event will be held in the Shoreham Court community.

WHO:	Councillor Anthony Perruzza, Toronto Hydro, City of Toronto Community Crisis Response Program, Toronto Community Housing, Youth Unlimited, and local volunteers, including youth and residents.
WHAT:	Toronto Hydro representatives and local volunteers will be canvassing the Shoreham neighbourhood. Volunteers expect to install about 350 light bulbs.
WHEN:	Saturday, August 24, 2013 2 - 4 p.m.
WHERE:	1-25 Shoreham Court (at the corner of Jane Street and Shoreham Drive)
WHY:	The Brighter Nights program responds to safety concerns in vulnerable neighbourhoods and helps make them brighter and safer, by installing compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and encouraging residents to leave them on overnight. A CFL bulb left on between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. costs about a penny a day and uses 75 per cent less electricity* than standard incandescent bulbs.
	The Brighter Nights program is a community based response to safety concerns. This community outreach program aligns safety with energy efficiency by focusing on how valuable lighting can be to our communities.  More info on this program can be found at www.torontohydro.com/brighternights
