/R E P E A T -- CAW Kicks off Labour Day at Nathan Phillips Square in Defence
of Public Services/
TORONTO, Sept. 6 /CNW/ - Joining with working people across the country, CAW members in the Greater Toronto Area will gather at Nathan Phillips Square to kick off Labour Day celebrations in Toronto under the banner of 'Protecting Our Public Services,' the theme of this year's celebrations.
The theme has special significance as a number of governments across the country are now attempting to pay down deficits brought on by the recession on the backs of public sector workers, through service cuts and wage freezes - to the detriment of public services. The CAW joins with others in the labour movement in rejecting this idea.
Prior to the 9:30 a.m. parade kick off, speeches will take place at Nathan Phillips Square (100 Queen Street West) at 9:00 a.m.
Including: Mayoral candidate Joe Pantalone CAW President Ken Lewenza Canadian Labour Congress President Ken Georgetti Toronto and York Region Labour Council President John Cartwright
National and local CAW leadership will be on site and available for interviews.
