LONGUEUIL, QC, Sept. 24, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) would like to inform road users that three major weekend work blitzes in the Champlain Bridge corridor are scheduled in October and November. Modular trusses will be installed under the bridge to support the edge girders and ensure safe passage for our users until the new Champlain Bridge opens.
These work blitzes are required to install 10 modular trusses near Nuns' Island, where clearance is insufficient to allow the work to be done from the river, as well as over Highway 132. These trusses will be installed both from the bridge deck and ground level, which will lead to lane closures.
The work will be done on weekends, from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, to minimize the effect on traffic. In certain cases, contractors and other partners will use this time to carry out other work to avoid further hindering users.
BLITZ 1: Weekend of October 3–4, 2015
Four modular trusses will be installed on the upstream side of the Champlain Bridge, causing the following road interferences:
- Complete closure of the Champlain Bridge to South Shore–bound traffic
- Complete closure of A-15 South from the Turcot Exchange to Highway 132
- Entrances to the A-15 South closed from the Turcot Exchange and Bonaventure Expressway
- Left lane closed on A-15 North
- Entrance to the A-15 South at Gaétan-Laberge Boulevard open with a marked route to Nuns' Island
BLITZ 2: Weekend of October 24–25, 2015
Two modular trusses will be installed under the auxiliary girders that straddle Highway 132 in Brossard. To keep traffic flowing in both directions on Highway 132, the following closures and major detours will be implemented.
- Complete closure of Highway 132 in Brossard in both directions under the bridge
- Complete closure of Westbound Marie-Victorin Boulevard under the bridge with a detour to maintain traffic flow
- Closure of two South Shore–bound lanes on the bridge (about 10 hr. in daytime), followed by two Montreal-bound lanes (about 10 hr. in daytime)
- Closure of entrances to Highway 132 West from the Champlain Bridge and A-10 West
BLITZ 3: Weekend of November 7–8, 2015
Four modular trusses will be installed on the downstream side of the Champlain Bridge, resulting in the following traffic restrictions:
- Closure of three lanes on the Champlain Bridge (downstream side)
- Counterflow traffic on the bridge: two lanes open to the South Shore and one to Montreal
- Closure of access ramps to the Champlain Bridge from Highway 132
The work is being closely coordinated with our transportation and public safety partners, both provincial and municipal. The Honoré-Mercier, Victoria, and Jacques-Cartier bridges as well as the Louis-Hippolyte-Lafontaine Tunnel will be fully available to compensate for the closures on the Champlain Bridge. Work site signage and variable message signs will detail closures and detours. The police will also be present throughout those weekends.
The JCCBI advises users to plan their trips in advance and consider other itineraries in order to avoid the Champlain Bridge corridor as much as possible. Maps showing the closures and detours for each blitz are available online.
The work may be delayed due to weather conditions. Consult our blog in the days before each blitz to check whether the work will be going ahead: ChamplainBridge.ca.
