Experts discuss a Modern Approach to Mining
VANCOUVER, April 26, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - To achieve its goal of "Thinking Differently," the CIM Convention 2018 will connect professionals from all fields of the mining industry during a three-day conference featuring more than 200 oral presentations by industry thought leaders. The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) is hosting the event that is expected to draw more than 5,000 delegates from Canada and around the globe at the Vancouver Convention Centre from May 6 to 9.
CIM is celebrating 120 years of fostering the exchange of knowledge, recognizing excellence and bringing people in the mining industry together under the leadership of the organization's first female Executive Director, Angela Hamlyn.
"There is a palpable feeling of excitement about the upcoming convention," said Hamlyn. "This is demonstrated by strong corporate support, registration numbers that are well above-average, and one of the largest technical programs that we have put on in years. We are also enthusiastic about the increased programming for students and young professionals, as well as our expanded student volunteer program. This has resulted in a doubling of the student registrations to date."
The conference will be kicked off by a thought-provoking Plenary Session on Monday, May 7, exploring some of the most relevant topics of discussion in the current climate of mining: political risks, how to manage the resource cycle, the new exploration model, financing, navigating government relations and social responsibility, and diversity.
The distinguished panel will be comprised of some of the industry's top officials including Mike Cinnamond, Senior Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer, B2Gold; Phillips S. Baker Jr., President and CEO, Hecla Mining Company; Nicole Adshead-Bell, Director, Cupel Advisory Corp.; John Bianchini, CEO and President, Hatch; Clive Johnson, CEO, B2Gold; Johnna Muinonen, Vice-President – Operations, RNC Minerals; Sean Roosen, Board Chair and CEO, Osisko Gold Royalties and CIM 2018 Convention Chair; and Leon Teicher, Chairman of the Board, Continental Gold.
The technical program, arranged under 12 thematic streams will address topics from across the mining spectrum including Mining Metamorphosis: Innovation that will Redefine Mining, Leading in Safety, and Environment and Sustainable Development.
Held in conjunction with the Convention is the 35th edition of the EXPO, Canada's Mining Marketplace, which will host 450 exhibiting companies featuring the latest mining equipment, tools and innovations.
