/R E P E A T -- Global perspectives on mining to be explored at World Mining Congress 2013 in Montreal/

MONTREAL, Aug. 6, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) is proud to host the 23rd World Mining Congress 2013 (WMC) from August 11 to 14, at the Palais des congrès de Montréal. WMC will host an estimated 1,200 mining experts from industry, academia and government representing more than 60 countries. Over the course of the three days, 400 renowned mining researchers, academics and scientists from around the globe are scheduled to present peer-reviewed papers during an intricate 14-track program.

Representing Natural Resources Canada, the Honorable Greg Rickford, Minister of State for Science and Technology and FedNor, will be on hand to address the opening Plenary on Monday, August 12. Seven high-profile industry leaders, from as many countries, are scheduled to discuss advances in mining from a global perspective during keynote addresses including:

• Rinaldo César Mancin, Ibram Board of Directors, Brazil and South America
• Jacynthe Côté, Chief Executive Officer of Rio Tinto Alcan and Honorary Chairperson of WMC
• Mark Cutifani, Chief Executive Officer, Anglo American
• Shri S.K. Srivastava, Secretary, Ministry of Coal, Government of India
• Steve Wood, Vice-President, Arcelor Mittal, Iron Ore Americas
• Wang Xianzheng, President of the China National Coal Association
• Anatoly Borisovich Yanovsky, Deputy Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation

"The theme of the Congress: 'Mapping the Future - Advances in Mining Engineering' speaks to the global effort towards sustainable mining," said the WMC General Chairperson, Ferri Hassani,  Webster Chair Professor in Mining Engineering at McGill University. "It is an honour to produce this prestigious congress being held for the first time in Canada." The Monday Plenary session will kick off a three-day technical program of 400 peer-reviewed papers. The congress will feature numerous lively, informative and provocative discussions on topics such as mining and communities; ethics and sustainability; women in mining; and several on the advances in mining technologies. Józef Dubiński, Chairman of the International Organizing Committee of WMC, will also take part in this prestigious gathering.

WMC is being held in conjunction with the 30th International Symposium on Automation and Robotics (ISARC), also hosted by CIM. Bringing both delegations together in business is The Expo! - a premier trade show featuring 260 technology and equipment suppliers in mining, automation, robotics and construction.

In anticipation of 2013 WMC, a social media community of 1,400 came together in the year leading up to the congress. CIM will provide on-site participants with a memorable taste of Montreal, Quebec, and Canada, through a dynamic social program and special events designed to share our knowledge, culture and diversity.
