TORONTO, Nov. 14, 2013 /CNW/ - On November 15, the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) and Métis communities across Ontario are commemorating Louis Riel, the Métis leader who was executed by the Canadian Government, for leading the Northwest Resistance in defense of Métis rights. Events in Toronto will include:
- 9:00-9:45 am - Métis Flag Raising Ceremony, Toronto City Hall (Members' Lounge)
- 11:00-12:15 pm - Louis Riel Day Ceremony at Northwest Rebellion Monument in Queen's Park. Highlights of the ceremony will include:
- Address by Gary Lipinski, President of the Métis Nation of Ontario
- Greetings from Honourable David Zimmer, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs
- Greetings from Norm Miller, PC MPP for Parry Sound-Muskoka
- Greetings from Michael Prue, NDP MPP for Beaches East York
- Address by Jean Teillet, a Métis lawyer and descendent of Louis Riel
- A procession of Métis veterans, elders and a Legion Honour Guard.
- Laying wreaths in memory of Louis Riel at the Northwest Rebellion monument
- Reception in Legislature following the ceremony
Note: President Gary Lipinski will be available for media interviews prior to and following the event.
- 2:00-6:00 pm - Law Society of Upper Canada Public Legal Education Event, at the Hilton Hotel at 145 Richmond Street West. This event will include:
- Panel discussion on significance of the R. v. Powley Supreme Court decision of 1993 with Métis lawyers Jean Teillet and Jason Madden and MNO President Gary Lipinski.
- Reading by Lawrence Hill, author of Blood: The Stuff of Life and The Book of Negroes.
