/R E P E A T -- Media Advisory - Demonstration in Gatineau and Ottawa: Stephen Harper Must Ensure the Future of Canada's Social Housing/

GATINEAU, QC and OTTAWA, Nov. 25, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - A demonstration beginning in front of a housing co-op in Gatineau and ending with a symbolic action facing Prime Minister Stephen Harper's offices in Ottawa will carry the Front d'action populaire en réaménagement urbain (FRAPRU)'s message: the federal government must put an end to the heavy uncertainty that currently surrounds the future of social housing in Canada.

An escalating number of social housing units are losing the financial support that they've been receiving from the Federal government for decades. This funding allows low-income tenants to pay a rent proportionate to their income. The termination of this funding will mean significant rent increases for these low-income tenants. Simultaneously, these housing units will become less accessible to low-income families and individuals who will in the future be in need of subsidized housing. In all, these cuts will impact 600,000 social housing units across Canada, including nearly 39,000 in 2014 and 2015.
