/R E P E A T -- Media advisory - Green ICTs focus of an international symposium to be presented in Montreal by PROMPT and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) from May 29 to 31/ Français
MONTREAL, May 24, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The green information and communications technology and (ICT) challenge offers an essentially untapped opportunity to save $800 billion annually in energy costs, as well as eliminate 15% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions.
In order to meet this challenge, ITU, a United Nations organization, has been mobilizing the international ICT sector since 2008 in order to emphasize the power of ICTs to aid in mitigating and adapting to climate change.
As a Member State of ITU, Canada will host this seventh ITU Symposium on ICTs, the Environment and Climate Change. The event is presented by PROMPT, an organization that stimulates university-industry R&D partnerships to increase the competitiveness of the ICT industry. PROMPT benefits from the Quebec government's leadership in regard to green ICTs, which play a strategic role in enhancing renewable energy.
The Montreal Symposium, the ITU's first in North America, will bring together hundreds of participants from around the globe to discuss green ICT issues over three days. It will address various topics such as next-generation green networks, smart cities and disaster preparedness and emergency communications.
