THUNDER BAY, ON, May 7, 2018 /CNW/ - When the Street Outreach Services (SOS) van at Shelter House in Thunder Bay broke down, Ontario Public Service Employee Union (OPSEU) locals from all over the region opened their wallets, and made sure this important community service could keep running.
OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas said he couldn't be more proud of the commitment of the union local members. "I know what these services mean to the community. And I know how much the front line staff care about the people they serve. This is a great example of union members who are willing to do what it takes to make sure the vulnerable have access to services they need, even if it means money out of their own pockets."

The SOS program allows workers to help vulnerable people on the streets access the services they need, often also reducing emergency needs for paramedics and the police.
OPSEU Local Vice-President, Joe Everett will present Shelter House with a cheque on Tuesday, May 8. "We are proud to make Thunder Bay a safer place for everyone," said Everett. "I hope to see the program use this new van to service Thunder Bay for many years to come."
Carl Thibodeau, Regional Vice-President of OPSEU Region 7 which includes the Thunder Bay area, affirmed commitment to Shelter House. "We will continue pressuring government to provide stable funding to Shelter House so that they are able to continue their important work in the community."
