/R E P E A T -- Media Advisory - Ottawa LCBO workers to hold info picket to protest expanded beer and wine sales/ Français
OTTAWA, May 29, 2015 /CNW/ - LCBO employees from Ottawa and area will stage an information picket on Saturday May 30 to protest the provincial government's plan to allow as many as 450 grocery stores to sell beer and wine.
The employees, members of Local 499 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, say the decision to push ahead with the plan is being done without adequate public consultation and without the expert advice of researchers and public advocacy groups who warn that the expanded availability of alcohol will lead to increased social and health care costs caused by its abuse.
"Kathleen Wynne is promoting this as a win-win for everyone. It isn't," said Mark Larocque, president of OPSEU Local 499. "There must be a balance between accessibility and responsibility. The government must first investigate and then publicly report on the risks to public health and safety."
