/R E P E A T -- Media Advisory - Physicians call for more bike lanes as colleague goes to court for civil disobedience/
TORONTO, Jan. 15, 2013 /CNW/ - A group of Toronto physicians is calling on City Council to invest in a massive expansion of bike lanes as a way of building a healthy city and reducing death and injury to cyclists.
On Thursday this week, Dr. Tomislav Svoboda will appear in provincial court on mischief charges related to his arrest for sitting down on the street in November when the Jarvis St. bike lane was being removed. Dr. Svoboda is a physician and researcher who works at St. Michael's hospital. He used the Jarvis St. bike lane to get to work from his home in the Annex.
"When bicyclists are killed or injured, these events are described as accidents. They could also be described as a failure to protect residents and to build a healthy city," said Dr. Svoboda.
About four people are killed every year while bicycling in Toronto. There were six people killed in 2012 and more than 1,100 people were injured.
Dr. Svoboda will hold a media conference on Wednesday morning to discuss bike safety and the call for more bike lanes. He will be joined by his legal counsel and colleague physicians.
