/R E P E A T -- Media Advisory: McGill Unions Protest to Protect their Freedom of Expression/
MONTREAL, Jan. 22, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Unions at McGill University will demonstrate on Wednesday, January 23, to celebrate the university's recent withdrawal of its Protocol Regarding Demonstrations, Protests and Occupations on McGill University Campuses and to protest the university's continuing efforts to restrict free expression.
A provisional version of the protocol, in force since February 2012, severely limits freedom of expression, assembly and association on campus. The university backed away from its proposed permanent protocol last week in the face of near unanimous opposition, promising a new round of consultations.
"We already have a great policy in place that governs demonstrations—it's called the Québec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms," said Lilian Radovac, president of AGSEM—McGill's Teaching Union. "We will continue to fight any attempt to limit the rights of workers, students and members of our community."
