The YMCAs of Québec, in partnership with Rio Tinto Alcan, to open a new Pathways to Education site in Pointe-Saint-Charles
MONTREAL, Feb. 13, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - As part of the 2014 Hooked on School Days, The YMCAs of Québec and Pathways to Education are inviting members of the media to the official launch of their Pointe-Saint-Charles site in the presence of Jacynthe Côté, Chief Executive of Rio Tinto Alcan.
A first-time collaboration between The YMCAs of Québec and Pathways to Education, the new point of service was made possible by Rio Tinto Alcan's continued support. In fact, it is the third Québec program site sponsored by the company. Founded in 2001 in Toronto, Pathways operates in 14 communities across Canada. While Canada's average high school dropout rates range between 25 and 30 percent, those rates can easily double in low-income communities. Breaking the barriers of poverty to build a graduation nation, Pathways to Education works closely with communities and school boards to provide after-school tutoring, mentoring, individual support and financial assistance.
The launch will be a unique opportunity to learn more about Pathways to Education's highly acclaimed school perseverance program. Proven to lower dropout rates, the program is already a resounding success across Canada, with results in recent years that continue to far exceed early hopes to reduce the dropout rate. Thanks to Pathways to Education, high school graduation rates have more than doubled and the number of students going on to post-secondary education has increased by 300 percent.
