/R E P E A T -- NARL Steelworkers Plan 156-km Trek to Highlight Refinery Safety Concerns/
COME BY CHANCE, NL, Sept. 2, 2017 /CNW/ - On Labour Day, Steelworkers representing North Atlantic Refining Limited employees will launch a 156-kilometre trek to the Confederation Building in St. John's to highlight their concerns over health and safety at the Come By Chance refinery.
"We're want to get the government to listen and to take our concerns seriously," said Glenn Nolan, President of United Steelworkers (USW) Local 9316.
Nolan, who has cystic fibrosis, plans to use a motorized bicycle to aid in his 156-kilometre walking/cycling trip, joined by co-workers and other supporters along the way. They will depart from the NARL refinery at 8 p.m. Monday, travelling throughout the night and arriving the following afternoon at the provincial legislature.

The union has raised concerns for the better part of two years that the N.L. government and NARL have failed to live up to commitments to embrace a Process Safety Management code of practice that was adopted by all three parties in 2014.
The Process Safety Management system gives workers a right to be involved in planning process changes, developing safe work procedures, training and other aspects of process safety in the refinery.
