Through SimTrek, health professionals will demonstrate in real-time how decisions get made in the operating room
BANFF, AB, Nov 19, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - You've seen surgeries performed without a hitch on television shows and in movies, but do you know what really goes on in operating rooms? When something unexpected happens, how do surgical teams communicate and act fast in order to save a patient's life?
On November 26 at 14:30, at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in Banff, AB, a team of health professionals will demonstrate what it's really like to work in a high-stakes operating room during SimTrek; an exciting exposé of hi-fidelity medical simulation presented as a part of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada's 8th Simulation Summit conference.
Led by Dr. Glenn Posner, Medical Director at the University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre (uOSSC), the SimTrek experience will act as the culmination of all the theatre-based simulation principles discussed during the Simulation Summit, November 25-26.
"This year, we're truly deconstructing theatre-based simulation, and presenting from A-Z on how a simulation scenario is constructed, implemented, and debriefed," said Dr. Posner.
For the first time, the annual SimTrek event will be staging its crisis resource management scenario in the operating room (OR), rather than its traditional emergency room (ER) setting.
The 2015 edition of SimTrek will focus on team-based communication around a pediatric surgical case, as a group of health care professionals stages an OR scenario in front of an interprofessional crowd. The session will feature the implementation of simulation principles, scenario debriefings, and constructive feedback from a diverse panel of medical education experts.
"Since the beginning, the Simulation Summit has always been about interprofessional education, and SimTrek is really a culmination of a diversity of perspectives on the implementation of medical education-based practice," said Dr. Posner.
"As the finale, SimTrek, in a way, tries to summarize what the Simulation Summit is really all about."
This year's Simulation Summit is being held in Banff, AB, and will examine ways that simulation technologies and techniques can help health care professionals learn and train effectively. The conference, co-chaired by Dr. Marcia Clark, MD, University of Calgary and Dr. Richard Cherry, MD, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, will host hundreds of simulation instructors, program directors, physicians, medical educators, and planners from multiple health care disciplines across Canada, from November 25-26, 2015.
About the Simulation Summit and the Royal College
Now in its 8th year, the Simulation Summit is hosted by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, a national, not-for-profit organization with more than 42,000 members in 87 countries. The Royal College contributes to improving the health of Canadians by setting the highest standards for specialty medical education, and advancing sound health and public policy.
As a part of its mandated tasks, the Royal College accredits simulation programs across Canada through a rigorous peer review process that measures their ability to meet the highest standards in administration, education and ethics. The Rockyview General Hospital Internal Medicine Simulation Program in Calgary, AB is the most recent simulation centre to be accredited through the Royal College, and will be recognized during the Simulation Summit's November 26 awards ceremony.
