MONTRÉAL, Nov. 17, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - As winter creeps up on us, Montréal Space for Life is winding up its year on the theme of time and taking it slow with a delicious, shimmering program of attractions, in a festive environment where visitors of all ages can enjoy magical experiences. At the Botanical Garden, the Main Exhibition Greenhouse is getting all dolled up for the A Sweet Christmas exhibition; parents and children will be thrilled with the giant candies and charmed by the plant arrangements in fun shapes and enchanting colours. The Christmas Fair will feature gifts for nature lovers and gardeners. The Tropical Adventure will be back at the Biodôme one last time to entertain our youngest visitors, and everyone will want to stop off at the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium and the Insectarium to see all the new attractions!
AT THE BOTANICAL GARDEN
A temptingly Sweet Christmas – December 5 to January 4
To celebrate all the magic of the holiday season, the Botanical Garden is putting on a delicious exhibition where giant candy canes and lollipops will compete with enormous cotton candy and mouth-watering icing houses to entice young and old. In the Main Exhibition Greenhouse, turned into a huge candy store for the occasion, parents and kids will be delighted by the lush décor around a spectacular Christmas tree made out of poinsettias. They can learn about anise, mint, licorice – plants that give us wonderful candy flavours. It's a fun way to escape the holiday rush and treat yourself to a marvellous exhibition, for all ages!
A delicious, green Christmas Fair – December 5, 6, 7 and 12, 13, 14
With plenty of gift ideas for gourmets and gardeners and lots of environmentally friendly finds, the Botanical Garden's Christmas Fair is the perfect spot to wrap up your holiday shopping on the first two weekends in December. There will be about twenty artisans offering plants, original jewellery, tastefully recycled clothing, perfumed soap, essential oils, wooden toys and gourmet fare, all attractively presented.
AT THE BIODÔME
Set off on a Tropical Adventure! – December 20 to February 8
Commander Macaw guides the whole family, and especially visitors ages 3 to 8, though a show, games and discovery tour, all in the welcome warmth of the Biodôme. At the Beaks and Bandaids rescue centre, kids can have fun playing, climbing, dressing up and, with the help of our animal keepers, learn how to feed and care for the animals. In the What's That Egg? puppet show, they can help Tamarin the monkey find out what's hidden inside a mystery egg and where it came from. Then they'll set off to explore the ecosystems. In this immersive environment, young visitors learn to recognize animals, birds and fish in their natural settings. They're sure to have lots of fun and make plenty of new discoveries!
AT THE RIO TINTO ALCAN PLANETARIUM
Vertiges and Tempo – Until May 31
In the Chaos Theatre, science combines with philosophy and the arts to deconstruct the notion of time in Vertiges, an astonishing immersive experience featuring thoughts and discussions that will cause you to rethink our relationship with time. In the Milky Way Theatre, Tempo will reconnect you with the cycles of the starry skies and plunge you into a universe encouraging you to re-examine your perception of time.
AT THE INSECTARIUM
Lydie Jean-Dit-Pannel Retrospective, 10 Years Among the Rustling Monarchs – Until January 11
Over the past decade, photographer and videographer Lydie Jean-Dit-Pannel has been engaged on a quest, initially sparked by a visit to the Insectarium, to capture the essence of the monarch migration. This unique artist uses her body, tattooed with these magnificent butterflies, as a medium to illustrate her goal and her imagination. Now she returns to the Insectarium with photos and videos in this exceptional exhibition.
Naturally Well Made: Insects in Winter
When nature dons its superb white cloak, where do all the insects disappear to? Our enthusiastic nature interpreters will explain the many tricks employed by these little six-legged creatures to survive the winter and return again, safe and sound, in spring.
Montréal Space for Life is made up of four attractions on the same site: the Botanical Garden, Biodôme, Insectarium and Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium. These four prestigious municipal institutions form Canada's largest natural science museum complex. Together, they are launching a daring, creative urban movement, urging everyone to rethink the connection between humankind and nature and cultivate a new way of living.
