/R E P E A T -- Testing of public warning sirens - On November 27, Montréal will carry out two simultaneous warning siren tests/

MONTREAL, Nov. 23, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The Ville de Montréal wishes to inform the community that a first coordinated siren test will be carried out in Montréal-Est and two boroughs located within a perimeter of an area at risk for a major industrial accident. Testing will be held in association with two private companies, whose industrial processes involve dangerous substances.

Warning siren testing will be carried out Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at 3:15 p.m. This technical test is aimed at making sure that the warning equipment is in good condition and at checking the level of preparedness of those involved in emergency measures. The warning siren will be heard within a radius of 1.5 to 1.6 km of the area at risk. No specific action is required from the public.

Warning siren tests are carried out regularly. They are part of sound risk management practices that meet all regulatory requirements. On November 27, warning siren testing will be carried out in Montréal-Est and in the boroughs of Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles. It should be pointed out that notices to residents have already been distributed door to door within the area at risk.

The Ville de Montréal will take advantage of the public warning siren test to launch a far-reaching public awareness campaign dealing with the industrial hazards involved and the proper behaviour in case of a major accident.  Residents living within the limits of the area at risk will receive complete documentation from the participating companies, explaining the hazards of an industrial accident in their area and the proper behaviour in case of a major accident involving uncontained release of toxic substances.
