MONTREAL, Sept. 25, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Today, the Concordia University Stingers, the McGill University Redmen and the Karnak Shriners announced that the 27th annual Montreal Shrine Bowl will be held at Concordia Stadium, 7200, Sherbrooke West, on Saturday, September 28th at 1:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend this family event to benefit the hospital. Tickets are $10 and are available at www.montrealshrinebowl.com and also at the door on Saturday.
This year's event King and Queen, Shriners patients Benjamin (12 years old) and Anamaria (15 years old) are excited to represent the hospital at the event and to watch the players in action. When Anamaria was born, she was immediately tested for osteogenesis imperfecta type 1 or brittle bone disease, which affected both her brothers Carlos and Ricardo. Although Anamaria has had seventeen broken bones since birth, it has been a full year since her last break. She still deals with back and knee pains and is seen in the physiotherapy department twice a year. At the age of 3, Benjamin couldn't walk on his feet; he would instead walk on his knees and crawl. He also had limited mobility on his upper body, couldn't balance himself and had trouble performing everyday tasks like getting dressed or holding a pencil. His pediatrician referred him to Shriners Hospitals for Children- Canada where he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. He underwent a surgery called a selective dorsal rhizotomy and following that he participated in intensive rehabilitation, at the hospital for two months and at home. Today at the age of 12, he can walk, use the stairs, holds his pencil and plays sports.
Some statistics: The previous 26 Montreal Shrine Bowl games have raised over $851,000 in donations for Shriners Hospital for Children® - Canada, in Montreal and more than 4158 strong legs have been running to allow weak legs to walk. More than 16,000 hours has been devoted from the Shrine Bowl Committee over the years. Thanks to Concordia University for hosting the game over these 25 years.
