TORONTO, May 4, 2015 /CNW/ - Parents who use positive parenting strategies in their day-to-day interactions with their families often find that their children are not the only ones to benefit.
"Parents (who use positive parenting skills) tell us that they feel more confident and competent about managing day-to-day family life, they're less stressed, less depressed and have less conflict with their partners over parenting issues," says Dr. Matthew Sanders, Professor of Clinical Psychology, Parenting and Family Support at the University of Queensland in Australia and Founder of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program. Developed more than 30 years ago, Triple P is one of the world's most effective parenting programs and has helped more than 4 million families.
"Using a positive parenting approach also makes it less likely that your child will develop more serious behavioral and emotional problems which can cause difficulties later in life, particularly for mental health," says Dr. Sanders.
Used in 25 countries, including Canada, Triple P's suite of programs have been translated into 22 languages. Triple P gives parents simple and practical strategies they can adapt to suit their own values, beliefs and needs.
Triple P programs have been integrated into existing services at many child, youth and family agencies, health units, early years and childcare centres, child protection agencies and schools in Ontario.
Parents are offered a number of different ways to access the program, either face-to-face with an individual provider, in large group seminars, in small, one-topic discussion groups, through eight-week group programs or even through self-help books or online.
"The Triple P program has been very useful to our family," says Susan, mother to two school-aged children and a full-time professional. "We noticed a huge difference for all of us. My son seemed much more confident with all the positive feedback we were giving him and it was useful to us in terms of reminding us about all the good behaviours that we were taking for granted. We were all in a much more positive mood."
Children's Mental Health Week is being celebrated across Ontario from May 3 - 9, 2015. During this week, Triple P encourages Canadian parents to learn more about the positive influence parenting can have on their child's mental health.
Dr. Sanders is available for phone interviews May 4th to the 8th and in person May 6th to May 8th in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). A parent who has participated in Triple P is also available for interview.
