    disease and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in the past 12 months - but
    had never heard of thyroid disease

STORY SUMMARY New research reveals in the past 12 months 63 percent of Canadians aged 18 to 24 years have experienced symptoms common to both thyroid disease and SAD. The thyroid gland, often called "gland central", produces the hormones that regulate our growth, maturation, speed of metabolism and sensitivity to other hormones. More than 2.4 million adult Canadians said they had been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder. It is estimated that another 2.4 million may be undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Untreated thyroid disorders may lead to heart disease, clinical depression, osteoporosis and infertility. In pregnant women, an untreated thyroid disorder may increase the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, learning disabilities and other developmental problems in children.

More prevalent among Canadians over age 50, menopausal and pregnant women, thyroid diseases may also strike teens and young adults. Mood swings, weight gain or loss, depression and fatigue are symptoms common to both SAD and thyroid diseases.
