/R E P E A T -- Video B-Roll available via CNW - Video Updates of NRU Return
to Service Activities/
TORONTO, March 3 /CNW/ - The following B-Roll is available by Broadcast On-Demand web download:
STORY SUMMARY: Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL) top priority is returning the National Research Universal (NRU) reactor to service as safely and as quickly as possible. AECL has released the following videos to provide more information on the NRU Return-to-Service Plan.
First Video:
AECL's Return to Service Project Director, David Cox, describes how AECL is managing the stress on the NRU vessel caused by the welding process. Using sample welds conducted on plates of aluminum, Mr. Cox shows viewers how heat from the welds can deform the surface of the vessel and may cause the vessel walls to contract, potentially applying too much force to the lower seal of the NRU. This fact, combined with the complexity of applying the welds from a remote location, further explains the need for AECL to conduct more in-depth research and numerous weld practices prior to completing the final two weld repairs.
Second Video:
In this video, Randy Lesco, AECL's General Manager Engineering & Projects, explains how his engineering team is ensuring that the weld repairs are done correctly with minimal impact on the NRU vessel. Cal Doucette, AECL Mechanical Design Engineer, takes you inside his office to outline the numerous competing priorities that must be addressed before finalizing the weld repair strategy. Once the strategy has been identified, the welding team must prove the strategy and qualify to conduct the weld on the NRU vessel. Mr. Lesco and Mr. Doucette explain that the last two repairs are the most challenging and therefore require more in-depth research, analysis and practise welds to ensure the repairs are done correctly, before NRU is safely returned to service.
