MONTREAL, March 27, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. on the evening of Saturday, March 31, Hydro-Québec will turn off the electric signs on its head office building as a gesture in support of Earth Hour, the global sustainability movement.
However, the company's year-round energy efficiency efforts go well beyond this symbolic action for Earth Hour, as evidenced by the many programs implemented in its administrative buildings and those intended for customers.
In fact, over the last 30 years, the company has cut its energy consumption at the head office by over 50%, largely by replacing the lighting system for the signs on the east and west façades in 2007.
Are you power-hungry?
One of Hydro-Québec's energy efficiency programs is Dare to Compare, a new online tool. Just answer a few questions to find out how your household electricity use compares to that of similar homes. You'll also get personalized tips on saving energy with no loss of comfort. To do the questionnaire, go to www.hydroquebec.com/residential/comparez-vous/index.html.
A few degrees less
A few good habits can help you save energy. For instance, lower the temperature by 3°C overnight or when you're out during the day and remember to turn off the lights when you leave a room. To find out what other factors make a difference to how much electricity you use, go to www.hydroquebec.com/residential/consommation/index.html.
