Well-known Canadian financial expert will help raise awareness about estate planning options
TORONTO, Nov. 8, 2018 /CNW/ - RBC Wealth Management and David Chilton, author of best-selling personal finance guides, The Wealthy Barber and The Wealthy Barber Returns, and former Dragon on CBC's Dragons' Den, have entered a three-year partnership to raise awareness of the benefits of retaining a corporate executor and trustee. Chilton will collaborate with RBC's Estate & Trust Services division to write articles, appear in videos and host speaking engagements designed to encourage the general public to consider using the services of corporate executors.
"I am a big believer in the benefits of corporate executorship. In fact, I refuse to take on the executor role for even my closest friends' wills. If you're wondering why, you've probably never been an executor," says Chilton. "I believe more Canadians should take advantage of corporate executors and I'm pleased to partner with RBC to help people through what can otherwise be an emotional and complicated process."
"Thirty years ago, Dave brought financial planning to every Canadian household with his best-seller, The Wealthy Barber. Since then, he has continued to be one of our country's best known and most trusted experts in personal finances, using his humour to simplify complicated financial topics," says Leanne Kaufman, President and CEO, Royal Trust. "That makes him the perfect partner to help us educate Canadians on the benefits of retaining a trust company as executor and trustee."
RBC Estate & Trust Services provides flexible and customized estate and trust solutions to families and businesses who wish to protect their assets and transfer their wealth for generations. One of the most important decisions clients face in this process is whom to name as executor, a representative who will be responsible for carrying out their wishes after their death.
According to Kaufman, many people designate a family member or close friend to execute their Will without considering the emotional, financial and time-consuming burdens that the role can bring: "Many executors tell us if they had known how difficult it would be, or the liability they would be assuming, they would not have accepted the role in the first place," she says. "And it's surprising how many Canadians aren't even aware that they can choose a trust company to settle their estate."
"Corporate executors bring wide-ranging skills, invaluable experience and an impartial perspective to the process," adds Chilton.
Using a corporate executor gives families peace of mind, knowing that an impartial professional is managing the estate settlement process, and all of the many associated tasks. RBC Estate & Trust Services can assist Canadians who are considering who will act as their own executor, as well as individuals who find themselves appointed as executor for someone else.
