TORONTO, April 2, 2012 /CNW/ - RBC has won the Award for Sustainability in Finance at the 10th Annual GLOBE Awards for Environmental Excellence. Presented by the GLOBE Foundation, the awards honour Canadian companies that excel in sustainable business practices and progressive development in technology and services. No other Canadian bank was a finalist for the 2012 GLOBE Awards.
This is the second time that RBC has been a GLOBE award winner. In 2010, the financial institution was honoured with the Corporate Award for Environmental Excellence - Business Strategy, in recognition of RBC's integrated, corporate-wide approach to sustainability and its proven record of environmental stewardship and commitment to environmental excellence.
"We're very proud to be honoured for our sustainability initiatives this year by the GLOBE Foundation, as environmental sustainability sits at the heart of our long-term, balanced approach to environmental issues," said Shari Austin, vice-president, Corporate Citizenship, RBC. "The RBC Environmental Blueprint continues to be our roadmap, guiding us as we reduce our operational footprint, mitigate and manage environmental risks and deliver innovative products and services."
RBC was awarded the winning 2012 GLOBE Award due to four areas of strength in sustainable finance:
- Committing $20 million to social finance, including a pioneering $10 million impact fund to help finance solutions for environmental and social challenges;
- Forging a strong foundation in environmental and social risk management;
- Providing a range of environmental products and services to RBC clients; and
- Leading the financial industry in providing free access to best-in-class green advice for businesses.
The GLOBE Foundation is a Vancouver-based, not-for-profit organization dedicated to finding practical business-oriented solutions to the world's environmental problems. Formed in 1993, it has helped companies and individuals realize the value of economically viable environmental business opportunities through conferences and events, research and consulting, project management, communications and awards. With more than 10,000 participants from 80 countries, GLOBE is North America's largest international gathering of senior representatives from the public, private and NGO sectors involved in the business of the environment.
RBC has a long history of environmental stewardship since the introduction of its first environmental policy in 1991. Today, RBC's commitment to the environment is realized through the RBC Environmental Blueprint, which addresses the company's three priority issues - climate change, biodiversity, and water - by reducing its operational footprint, promoting responsible lending, offering environmentally responsible products and services, and promoting sustainability. RBC has been recognized as a leader by socially responsible investors and external rating agencies including the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, the Jantzi Social Index, the FTSE4Good Index and the Canadian Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index.
