RCMP charge London woman with defrauding Employment and Social Development Canada/Service Canada, and the Ontario Teacher's Pension Plan Français
LONDON, ON, Jan. 28, 2019 /CNW/ - Members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) London Financial Crime Unit, working on a complaint from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) / Service Canada, and the Ontario Teacher's Pension Plan (OTPP), have charged a London woman with various offences related to overpayment of Old Age Security (OAS), Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Teacher pension plan benefits (OTPP).
The investigation began in October 2017 when the RCMP was alerted by ESDC/ Service Canada that a fraud had been committed. The police investigation revealed that OAS, CPP and OTPP benefit payments continued long after the accused's parents passed away and were accessed by her through a joint bank account. The accused's parents passed away in 1993 and 2006. After her father's passing in 2006, the accused collected in excess of $179,000 from OAS / CPP over an 8-year period (2006 – 2014), and in excess of $135,000 over a 12-year period (2006 – 2018) from OTPP.
Gladys O'Brien, a 60-year-old London resident, is charged with:
- 3 counts of Fraud over $5,000, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada(CCC)
- 2 counts of Theft over $5,000, contrary to the CCC
- Possession of proceeds of crime, contrary to the CCC
Gladys O'Brien is scheduled to appear in Court on February 27, 2019 at the London Court of Justice, 80 Dundas Street, London, ON.
