RDC now accepting applications for 2016 high school enrichment awards
ST. JOHN'S, Aug. 31, 2015 /CNW/ - The Research & Development Corporation (RDC) is accepting applications for the 5th annual Research Inspired Student Enrichment (RISE) awards competition starting today. RISE awards provide Level II students in Newfoundland and Labrador with the opportunity to participate in research-related enrichment programs in Canada and the US. The awards range in value from $7,000 to $13,000 and are open to students who demonstrate academic excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and who will be completing Level II by June 2016.
RISE award winners will attend one of four enrichment programs: the Research Science Institute based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Summer Science Immersion program at the Deep River Science Academy in Ontario, the Da Vinci Engineering Enrichment Program at the University of Toronto, and Students on Ice, which takes students and researchers on a ship-and land-based journey through the Arctic.
The RISE Awards give Newfoundland and Labrador high school students the opportunity to explore the world of research and development and work closely with top scientists, researchers and teachers on real R&D projects. It's a program that can inspire passion and launch careers in science, technology, engineering or math.
"I really enjoyed collaborating with some of the world's top high school students and professors at MIT. It was an unforgettable experience. I would definitely recommend that other students apply to RISE. It is an amazing opportunity to experience research and learn more about new areas of science." - 2014 RISE recipient Michael Connors.
In the first four years of the program, RDC has provided 50 RISE awards to Newfoundland and Labrador high school students. RDC encourages principals, teachers, parents and guardians to identify these high-achieving students and encourage them to apply. A RISE award provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and an experience that could significantly contribute to a student's future career.
