KATOWICE, Poland, Dec. 11, 2018 /CNW/ - On the margins of the 24th Conference of the Parties (COP24) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Canada's Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna, met with the European Union's Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Cañete, and China's Special Representative on Climate Change Affairs, Xie Zhenhua. Canada, China, and the European Union have been working closely together for the past three years in an effort to drive climate action on the international stage. Canada, China, and the European Union co-founded the Ministerial on Climate Action—first hosted in Montréal, in 2017, followed by a second conference in Brussels, in 2018—to build political momentum for international climate negotiations.
The three climate leaders recognized the need for ambitious climate action and the importance of multilateralism—countries working together to tackle global issues such as climate change. Not only will climate action benefit our planet, it will also protect our collective health and provide a global economic opportunity in clean growth worth trillions of dollars.
Canada, China, and the European Union remain committed to working together to support the adoption of clear rules for implementing the Paris Agreement. These rules will ensure greater transparency and accountability in how countries reduce pollution to fight climate change.
Canada's team at COP24 is playing an important role in the negotiations to help bring countries together and find solutions that will help the world make the transition to a cleaner economy and a healthier environment.
