POINTE-CLAIRE QC, Aug. 30, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The elected members of the Council of the City of Pointe-Claire acknowledge Reliance's decision to comply with the order issued by the Minister of the Ministère du Développement durable, de l'Environnement, de la Faune et des Parcs (MDDEFP), but are surprised by and somewhat skeptical about this late stand, which they hope is not a stalling tactic on the part of the company to cause an undue delay, at the expense of the health and safety of the population.
We stated this week, when we learned about the presence of PCBs on the site, that we would not accept any administrative delays or stalling tactics. We have taken note of the Minister's expectations and are pleased to learn that, beginning this week-end, intrusion, fire detection and fire extinguishing equipment will be installed on the site to make it safer.
That said, the municipal authorities plan to use every available means to achieve the expected results, and will be unyielding in their commitment to resolving this issue.
Pointe-Claire's municipal authorities will take a zero-tolerance approach and will not compromise the safety of citizens.
We hope that the company will have the financial capacity to complete the entire operation; however, should they show any signs of slowing down, we trust that the Minister will step in, as he pledged to do this morning, and ensure that the MDDEFP immediately take over the process of removing the hazardous materials from the premises and decontaminating the site.
