LONGUEUIL, QC, Oct. 21, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) would like to inform road users that two major work blitzes at the Champlain Bridge are scheduled for the coming weekends. Modular trusses will be installed under the bridge to support the edge girders and ensure safe passage for our users until the new Champlain Bridge opens.
These work blitzes are required to install 10 modular trusses near Nuns' Island, where clearance is insufficient to allow the work to be done from the river, as well as over Highway 132. These trusses will be installed both from the bridge deck and ground level, which will lead to lane closures.
The work will be done on weekends, from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, to minimize the effect on traffic. In certain cases, contractors and other partners will use this time to carry out other work to avoid further hindering users.
BLITZ 1: Completed!
Four modular trusses were installed on the upstream side of the Champlain Bridge; check out images and video of the work.
BLITZ 2: Weekend of October 24–25, 2015
Two modular trusses will be installed under the auxiliary girders that straddle Highway 132 in Brossard. To keep traffic flowing in both directions on Highway 132, the following closures and major detours will be implemented.
- Complete closure of Highway 132 in Brossard in both directions under the bridge
- Complete closure of Westbound Marie-Victorin Boulevard under the bridge with a detour to maintain traffic flow
- Closure of two South Shore–bound lanes on the bridge, followed by two Montreal-bound lanes
- Closure of entrances to Highway 132 West and East from the Champlain Bridge and A-10 West
- Right lane closed on A-15 North between exit 60 towards Verdun and exit 61 towards Atwater Avenue
- Complete closure of exit 61 towards Atwater Avenue from A-15 North
BLITZ 3: Weekend of November 7–8, 2015
Four modular trusses will be installed on the downstream side of the Champlain Bridge, resulting in the following traffic restrictions:
- Complete closure of the Champlain Bridge to Montreal–bound traffic
- Closure of access ramps to the Champlain Bridge from Highway 132 and A-10 West
- Left lane closed on A-15 South between exit 61 towards Atwater Avenue and the Nuns' Island bypass bridge
The work is being closely coordinated with our transportation and public safety partners, both provincial and municipal. The Honoré-Mercier, Victoria, and Jacques-Cartier bridges as well as the Louis-Hippolyte-Lafontaine Tunnel will be fully available to compensate for the closures on the Champlain Bridge. Work site signage and variable message signs will detail closures and detours. The police will also be present throughout those weekends.
The JCCBI advises users to plan their trips in advance and consider other itineraries in order to avoid the Champlain Bridge corridor as much as possible. Maps showing the closures and detours for each blitz are available online.
The work may be delayed due to weather conditions. Consult our blog in the days before each blitz to check whether the work will be going ahead: ChamplainBridge.ca.
