Research in GT corn shows residual herbicide two-pass system manages resistant weeds and boosts yield

MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 16, 2013 /CNW/ - Research from BASF Canada Inc. (BASF) has found there is value in using a residual two-pass system to manage herbicide resistant weeds in GT corn, while increasing average yield by more than 20 bushels per acre.

In 2012, BASF conducted field trials in Ontario using a pre-emergence application of INTEGRITY^® followed by ARMEZON™ post-emergence to evaluate the residual activity of a two-pass herbicide system on GT corn. The results of the two-pass system show improved control of tough and resistant weeds, including giant ragweed, plus there was an average yield increase of 20.7 bushels per acre compared to a single glyphosate application applied at the four leaf stage.

"These findings are valuable for growers who are concerned with herbicide-resistance on their field, and they give another option to manage Group 2, triazine and glyphosate resistant weeds," says Sean Chiki, Brand Manager for Herbicides at BASF Canada.

The research is timely for growers. Earlier this spring, BASF released findings from an Ipsos Reid survey that found 61 per cent of growers in Ontario believe their weeds are getting tougher to control. That sentiment was echoed at an agricultural retailer meeting in February where 83 per cent of the 312 in attendance reported they have customers with weeds that are suspected to be herbicide resistant.

"We've listened to growers and are doing research to help determine new strategies for effective weed management of resistant biotypes," says Chiki. "Introducing residual weed control through early crop development is a key step to managing resistant weeds.  Adding multiple modes of action to top up a glyphosate or atrazine application is also critical to eliminate those weeds in order to maximize your yield in GT corn."

When combined in a two-pass system, INTEGRITY used pre-emerge followed by ARMEZON post-emerge provides five different groups of chemistry for effective resistance management and residual control of all major grass and broadleaf weeds. ARMEZON also offers a wide application window from the first to seven leaf stage, which gives growers the flexibility needed for in-crop application.
