Restoration continues as Hurricane Sandy leaves 45,000 Torontonians without power - Update #4
TORONTO, Oct. 30, 2012 /CNW/ - Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited (Toronto Hydro) crews are working to restore power to approximately 45,000 customers who remain without electricity following sustained strong wind and rain that touched down in Toronto on Monday evening.
Strong wind gusts clocked at more than 60 kilometres per hour brought down trees, branches and power lines across the city. Areas of the city hardest hit are East York, Scarborough, Upper Beaches, Leaside and the Junction.
Toronto Hydro crews are working to remove safety hazards associated with downed wires and trees, and restore power where possible. With the help of daylight, crews will be conducting full damage assessments and coordinating extensive repairs. Outage numbers are expected to rise as people wake up to learn they are without power.
Toronto Hydro will be restoring outages that affect the greatest number of customers first. Localized outages affecting one or two houses will be a secondary priority. Weather conditions may interrupt efforts over the course of the day. Customers should prepare to be without power for most of day.
Customers may discover downed power lines during their morning commutes. Toronto Hydro is reminding people to stay away (at least 10 metres back) from damaged poles and equipment as it may be energized. Electrical emergencies and power outages should be reported to Toronto Hydro at 416-542-8000.
Customers can expect continuous updates from Toronto Hydro via Twitter (@TorontoHydro), on torontohydro.com, and through the media. A voice message update is also available should customers wish to call 416-542-8000.
