Tobacco Study Shows Problem is Taking Root in Western Canada

CALGARY, Nov. 18 /CNW/ - Those who think contraband tobacco is a problematic issue dealt with in Eastern Canada only may have to think again.

At a news conference to be held at a Holiday Inn Express located in Stephen Harper's riding, findings from the first-ever Cigarette Butt Study conducted in Alberta will be unveiled as part of the Canadian and Western Convenience Stores Associations' efforts to fight contraband tobacco across the country.

In the past two years across Canada, 2,300 convenience stores have closed their doors - much in part to the increased use of contraband tobacco. With some of the highest tobacco taxes in Canada, Alberta and the Prairies provinces are set for a growing illicit tobacco market in the near future.
