230,000 square foot Expansion and Renovation Adds New Retail and Dining Options
OTTAWA, Sept. 26, 2013 /CNW/ - The Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited is pleased to announce that Rideau Centre, Ottawa's premier shopping destination, is launching a $360 million multi-year redevelopment project that will revitalize the 30-year-old shopping centre and ensure it remains the destination of choice in the Nation's Capital.
The redevelopment of Rideau Centre will continue until 2016 and include new best-in-class and first-to-market retailers such as Simons, Nordstrom, Victoria's Secret, J. Crew and other leading brands. In addition, the existing Harry Rosen store will be transformed into a flagship location reflecting the retailer's latest thinking and store design. A four level expansion will add 230,000 square feet of leasable area as well as a three level underground parking garage. The redesigned shopping centre will include significant façade enhancements along Rideau Street including a refurbished Ogilvy Building heritage façade and a complete interior renovation that will feature new quartz flooring, enhanced lighting, glass guardrails and modern amenities. The redeveloped mall will also include two direct light rail transit access points to Rideau Station, a key stop along Ottawa's new Confederation Line.
"The significant changes underway will elevate the shopping experience for customers and reaffirm Rideau Centre's position as Ottawa's leading shopping centre," said Sal Iacono, Senior Vice President, Development and Portfolio Management at Cadillac Fairview, which owns and manages Rideau Centre. "The new Rideau Centre will reflect Cadillac Fairview's commitment to creating exciting retail environments that deliver best-in-class retailers and high quality dining opportunities."
A key feature of the redevelopment project is a 35,000 square foot dining hall that will offer a unique and elevated dining experience for Ottawa shoppers, featuring 16 premium branded eating establishments, seating for 850 people and the introduction of reusable dinnerware, glassware and metal cutlery. This environmentally friendly approach to traditional fast food will reduce the amount of waste from wrappers, paper plates and plastic cups and utensils and demonstrate Rideau Centre's continuing commitment to sustainability best practices.
"This project capitalizes on our location in the heart of downtown Ottawa and will reenergize the area with a dynamic new presence along Rideau Street," said Cindy VanBuskirk, General Manager of Rideau Centre. "We think our customers will love the new stores, dining hall and atmosphere that's being created through this comprehensive expansion and renovation project."
Throughout the redevelopment period, Rideau Centre will remain open for business. Wherever possible, steps will be taken to minimize the impact on shoppers.
