SHAWINIGAN, QC, Dec. 2, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - Rio Tinto Alcan is proud to announce a corporate donation totalling $75,000 over three years to Centraide Mauricie. The yearly $25,000 contribution is wholly part of the series of measures meant to mitigate the impacts of the Shawinigan smelter shutdown on the community.
"Rio Tinto Alcan has been in the Mauricie region for decades and maintains close ties with the community. This financial involvement with Centraide Mauricie will help in the fight against poverty-related issues in the region," stated Étienne Jacques, Chief Operating Officer, Rio Tinto Alcan Primary Metal, North America.
Since the early 2000s, Rio Tinto Alcan has invested more than $10.5 million in support of various regional economic and social development organisations and initiatives, including a Pathways to Education Centre in Shawinigan, the financial support for the 47th Quebec Games Finals, the Rio Tinto Alcan Fund in collaboration with the Shawinigan Local Economic Development Centre, the launch of an industrial diversification fund, our financial contribution for the implementation of the Shawinigan City Entrepreneurship Centre, our participation as a founding partner of the Energy Efficiency Excellence Centre, and our partnership with Cité de l'Énergie.
"This donation is excellent news for Centraide Mauricie. More than 60% of our income comes from employees. In recent years, the job losses have had a negative impact on our campaigns, making Rio Tinto Alcan's commitment all the more comforting. The company is a corporate citizen who, like us, believes that social and community development are at the heart of regional development," asserted Julie Colbert, General Manager, Centraide Mauricie.
For over 35 years, Centraide Mauricie has been mobilising local volunteers, businesses, and organisations around an annual fundraising campaign in support of social needs in the area.
