Roads, congestion and transit are key election issues for CAA members
THORNHILL, ON, Oct. 9, 2014 /CNW/ - On the municipal campaign trail, the conversation around transportation has taken centre stage.
As a leading transportation advocate, CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) surveyed our members in an effort to determine the municipal issues that matter most to them.
The CAA Members Matter1 survey found the top three election issues include fixing our roads, easing gridlock and improving transit.
- 71 per cent said road improvements
- 55 per cent said reducing congestion
- 44 per cent said transit improvements
"Decisions made by elected officials in your community will directly affect your everyday life and the quality of your neighbourhood. They decide on how and where to spend your tax dollars, whether to approve or deny development in your area, when to build public transit or fix your roads. That's why it's so important to find out where the candidates stand on key issues and make an informed choice on Election Day," said Caroline Grech, Government Relations, CAA SCO.
In a CAA poll conducted earlier this year, 68 per cent of those surveyed voted in the 2010 municipal election and 82 per cent of those surveyed intend to vote on October 27.
To help the public understand not only the importance of voting, but also some of the core issues impacting municipal politics, CAA SCO sat down for one-on-one interviews with the leading mayoral candidates in three key races – Brampton, Mississauga and Toronto. The questions addressed the need to build transportation infrastructure, reduce congestion and improve safety on our roads.
