MILTON, ON, Oct. 4, 2013 /CNW/ - National Fire Prevention Week kicks off on Sunday, October 6 to October 12th. Roxul and the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council partners are working together to build awareness and educate the public about the dangers of residential fires, especially in the kitchen.
Community events are set to happen the day before National Fire Prevention Week across Canada on Saturday, October 5th at over a hundred local Home Depot locations. Families are invited to come out to meet their local fire fighters and Council partners to learn about fire prevention.
"For most families, preparing food at home is part of daily life. Unfortunately, cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires in Ontario. We all have a role to play to prevent these fires. I am pleased to be working with Roxul for Fire Prevention Week 2013 so that fire departments have the support they need to enhance public fire safety in their local communities. Their support for public education and fire prevention goes a long way in making Ontario a safe place from fire," said Tadeusz (Ted) Wieclawek, Chair of the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council.
Fire Prevention Canada reports that an average of eight Canadians die each week as a result of fire. While it's near impossible to make your house completely fireproof, you can build or remodel it using fire inhibiting materials. The better ones will help to withstand fire hazards and they may also give you those few extra minutes - or seconds - needed to get your loved ones to safety.
"Roxul is proud to partner with the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council and to support National Fire Prevention Week. Too many lives are lost due to preventable house fires," said Trent Ogilvie, Roxul President. "Through this partnership we hope to build awareness and to educate community members on fire prevention and the need to have a fire escape plan. Our community's safety is a top priority and we're proud to offer a building product that is non-combustible with a melting temperature of 1177 degrees Celsius."
When considering a home renovation, be sure to do your research for fire-rated and non-combustible products. ROXUL produces mineral wool insulation that resists temperatures up to approximately 1177° C (2150°F) and when directly exposed to fire, it will not develop smoke, or promote flame spread. It can act as a fire barrier delaying the spread of fire from room to room allowing for a few additional moments to safely escape. Minutes can mean the difference between life or death when an unexpected fire starts in your home. ROXUL products help save people, property and reduce environmental damages.

The Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council in alliance with the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs are diligent collaborators in supporting the grass roots educational efforts of the more than 120,000 men and women representing the Canadian Fire Services. The resulting campaigns and initiatives help drive fire and safety awareness and emergency preparedness that can make the difference between life and death in a crisis situation. Two of the most important messages firefighters strive to reach out to people with are the importance of having working smoke alarms throughout the home and preparing and practicing a home fire escape plan.
