Royal Agricultural Winter Fair to open with a sweet treat
First 1,000 visitors to receive fresh-baked butter tarts when The Royal opens Friday, Nov. 7
TORONTO, Nov. 5, 2014 /CNW/ - The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is preparing for a sweet start to its 92nd year.
The first 1,000 visitors through the doors when The Royal opens on Friday, November 7 for its 10-day run at the Direct Energy Centre and Ricoh Coliseum will be welcomed with delicious complimentary butter tarts to start their day in style.
The fresh-baked sweet treats from OMG Baked Goodness, are being handed out in honour of a new feature at The Royal this year — the inaugural Butter Tart Competition.
"This is about celebrating two fantastic Canadian traditions at the same time," says Sandra Banks, CEO of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. "The butter tart is a quintessential Canadian favourite when it comes to desserts and The Royal has been celebrating the very best in the world of farming and fresh, local food for nine decades."
The Royal went out in search of Ontario's best butter tarts at several regional fairs over the summer and fall, as part of The Road to The Royal Chef Challenge, presented by TSC Stores.
Winners from the regional competitions have been invited to compete for the title of the Grand Champion Butter Tart on Wednesday, November 12 at 1 p.m. on the Food and Lifestyle Stage.
The competition takes place on Champions' Day, when new and previous Royal Champions in agricultural products like jams, honey, maple syrup, wine and cheeses will be featured. There will be sampling and demonstrations all day long.
In addition to free butter tarts for the first 1,000 visitors, opening day festivities at The Royal also include a live performance by Juno Award Nominee Royal Wood at noon, the first round of The Road to the Royal Chef Challenge Semi-Finals and, for the first time in Canada, National Shetland Pony Racing in The Royal Horse Show.
Featuring 10 days of diverse programming which connects farming and food experiences in fresh new ways, The Royal takes place from November 7-16, 2014 in the Direct Energy Centre and Ricoh Coliseum.
Funding support for The Royal has been provided by the City of Toronto and the Government of Ontario.
