OTTAWA, Nov. 5, 2013 /CNW/ - The greatest of the Great Lakes is being celebrated as the latest silver collector coin produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. The Lake Superior coin is the first in a five-coin series featuring the famous Great Lakes.
"The Mint is proud to celebrate Canada's people, places and passions, including the Great Lakes, which have shaped our collective identity in so many ways," said Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. "Lake Superior has captured the imagination of generations and this coin will continue to foster the amazement and delight of Canadians and collectors alike for years to come."
Lake Superior is not only the world's largest freshwater lake by surface area but also the source of 10 percent of the planet's fresh water. Lake Superior borders Ontario, as well as the American states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Fed by 200 rivers, it measures 563 kilometres north to south and 257 kilometres west to east. Its renowned shoreline in Northern Ontario is noted for massive plummeting cliffs composed of ancient rock that hosts some of the world's oldest fossils.
This $20 fine silver coin is produced with 99.99% pure silver and features a reverse image of a bathymetric map of Lake Superior replicated by Royal Canadian Mint engravers and highlighted with coloured enamel. Limited to a mintage of just 10,000 worldwide, it retails for $114.95.
The Lake Superior silver collector coin can be ordered directly from the Mint at 1-800-267-1871 in Canada, 1-800-268-6468 in the US, or on the Internet at www.mint.ca. It is also available by subscription with the other coins in the Great Lakes series. Please contact the Mint for details.
The remaining coins in the Great Lakes series will be launched as follows: Lake Ontario (March 2014), Lake Erie (June 2014), Lake Michigan (October 2014) and Lake Huron (February 2015).
