OTTAWA, Nov. 8, 2012 /CNW/ - Remembrance Day marks the day where Canadians across the country will pay tribute to men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf in a traditional moment of silence.
Over the last few years and in the spirit of remembrance, the Royal Canadian Mint has paid homage to Canada's veterans through numismatic and circulation coins. The recent Highway of Heroes and the Georgina Pope silver commemorative coins continue the proud Mint tradition of issuing coins that honour Canada's veterans and the theme of Remembrance.
"Remembrance Day is a day that gives us all an opportunity to reflect on Canada's rich history," said Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. "The Mint is proud that its legacy of circulation and collector coins are permanent reminders of the sacrifice and courageous efforts of our fallen, our veterans and our troops."
The 2011 Highway of Heroes $10 Silver Commemorative Coin, features a scene of people on a bridge, many carrying Canadian flags in silence as a convoy passes them. The official designation of Highway of Heroes was borne in 2002 and refers to the passageway between Trenton and Toronto, known for the solemn journey of fallen soldiers and their families. The Royal Canadian Mint is donating 20 dollars from the sale of each Highway of Heroes commemorative coin to the Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial and the Military Families Fund. The coin honours women's contribution to the Canadian military while also celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Georgina Pope - one of the pioneers not only of women in the military but also of the profession of nursing in Canada. The exquisite design highlights the evolution and progress of women's roles in the Canadian military. Please visit www.mint.ca for more information.
